Haha, so true. I am a big fan of r&b, soul, Motown (not all 1950s I know) and there are some great examples where a man is singing his heart out while simultaneously providing a list of misdeeds and warning signs.
Maybe not the best example, but one of my favourite songs of all time is the 8 minute classic – “I Miss You” by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. The legendary Teddy Pendergrass is on lead vocals and he spends several minutes declaring how, despite a considerable period of time, he is still passionately in love with his ex and he wants nothing more than to win her back. He is “on his knees” “begging her please!!”. Throughout the song it keeps cutting to a pretend conversation he is having with her on the phone, and at some point he goes:
“Hey, enough about you and me! How’s my little son? Does he ever ask about me?”
Like, you have a fucking son? I am sure she is thrilled to have a man who didn’t even bother to keep in touch with his own son for years back in her life!
